Her post-doctoral research has changed understandings of\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0value of Pablo Picasso\u2019s Guernica through\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0investigation of its collective translation through a series of 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0century international remakings.\u00a0<span class=\"il\">The<\/span>\u00a0international importance of this research has been acknowledged through three awards from\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0UK\u2019s Arts and Humanities Research Council, Global Challenges Research Fund.\u00a0<span class=\"il\">The<\/span>\u00a0research has advanced\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0important dialogue between art and activism by creating new knowledge on how remakings of globally important art works reflect lived experiences of local and global politics. This research has revealed key collaborative activist art practices and formed an international community of knowledge and understanding.\u00a0<span class=\"il\">The<\/span>\u00a0further dissemination and impact of this research through documentary films, a touring exhibition and publications concerning remakings of Picasso\u2019s Guernica has promoted healing and solidarity amongst communities especially in South Africa and\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0UK, and with those who have suffered in Spain, in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. This project expands and develops through collaboration with artists and collectives.<\/p>\n<p><b>Details on\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0most recent Guernica Remakings project:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Nicola Ashmore\u00a0has been awarded funding from\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0Arts and Humanities Research Council in\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0UK through their Creative Economy stream for a project entitled Guernica Remakings &#8211; Ghana and South Africa. This project runs from Nov 2021 \u2013 Feb 2023. This builds upon two AHRC funded projects that began in South Africa and travelled to Mauritius. Ashmore\u2019s international research into 21<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0century remakings of Guernica will further engage young people in co-creative art practice and continues her collaboration with artist Savina Tarsitano and \u00a0Kids Guernica peace project,\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0Keiskamma Art Project,\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0Afrogallonism studio of Serge Attukwei Clottey and University of Brighton Professor of Sustainable Tourism Marina Novelli. There will be a focus on\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0rural village of Hamburg in South Africa and\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0urban setting of Labadi in Accra, in Ghana, where there are two established and distinct art practices.\u00a0With a broader focus on creative practice and\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0creative economy in relation to sustainable development, Nicola, as Principal Investigator, will be exploring young people&#8217;s understanding of\u00a0<span class=\"il\">the<\/span>\u00a0creative economy in their locality.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; Dr Nicola Ashmore has worked at\u00a0the\u00a0University of Brighton in\u00a0the\u00a0UK, since 2007.
