ESPRONCEDA – Institute of Art & Culture is pleased to present “In Between” – Joseph Beuys: A talk with Martin Müller”, a gathering that explores the legacy of one of the most influential artists of post-war Germany.

The event is held in collaboration with the Goethe Foundation, strengthening cultural dialogue between Germany and Barcelona through contemporary artistic practices and critical thought.

The activity is part of NEB & Inclusió, a program developed by ESPRONCEDA as an official partner of the New European Bauhaus (NEB). This initiative fosters new forms of creativity at the intersection of sustainability, aesthetics, accessibility, and cultural inclusion, promoting spaces where art is activated as a tool for social reflection and collective transformation.

Between thought and sound: a dialogue on Beuys

Joseph Beuys remains a fundamental figure in contemporary art, whose ideas continue to resonate across generations. Martin Müller, art historian, curator and artist, offers a vision of Beuys’ work and thinking. He completed his doctorate on Beuys in 1993 under the supervision of the collector and museum founder Peter Ludwig and has since developed transdisciplinary projects in international contexts. As Müller emphasizes, “If one wants to understand Beuys, one must pay attention to the difference between understanding and explaining.”

The event begins with an initial impulse and unfolds as a conversation with the audience. Beuys’ belief that “thinking is plastic art” frames the dialogue, inviting reflection on the boundaries between thought, material and experience.

Sound and space: H e u Anne Müller

The musician and artist Heu Anne Müller, who activated the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona in 2025, transforms the space and the audience through live-created sound environments, using instruments, voice, everyday objects and language. Her practice seamlessly combines sound art, concert performance, installation and audiovisual composition, exploring states of transition, atmospheres and subtle transformations of perception.

Anne Müller’s performances create immersive situations where sound, image, space and memory converge. She combines electronic music, voice, text, video, photography and live performances in site-specific constellations, producing works characterized by sensitivity, reduction and an intuitive yet conceptually grounded approach. Her installations and concerts have been presented internationally in concert halls, museums, galleries, festivals and public spaces.

About the artist – Anne Müller

Born in 1978, Anne Müller studied Musicology at the Free University of Berlin and Audiovisual Media Studies at the Konrad Wolf Film University in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Her practice is defined by experimentation with sound as material, combined with performative presence and spatial awareness, creating experiences that invite attentive listening and reflection.
