ESPRONCEDA – Institute of Art & Culture is pleased to host the Barcelona official node of MIT Reality Hack 2026, one of the world’s leading hackathons dedicated to immersive technologies. Taking place simultaneously in Boston (MIT) and at selected nodes worldwide, MIT Reality Hack brings together artists, technologists, designers, researchers, and curious minds to explore new forms of creation through extended reality (XR), collective experimentation, and playful invention. The event is part of the IMMENSIVA program.

During five days, the Barcelona node will be connected live with the MIT campus, forming part of the official global framework of the hackathon and welcoming local participation from the XR and creative communities.

MIT Reality Hack — experimenting with XR, community, and play

MIT Reality Hack is conceived as an open and inclusive hackathon that challenges conventional formats. Rather than focusing solely on technical outcomes, it emphasizes learning, collaboration, and experimentation across disciplines and levels of experience. The event is designed for first-time participants, seasoned hackers, and those who wish to engage in alternative or exploratory ways.

Projects developed during the hackathon may rethink the hackathon format itself, address social and cultural challenges, or result in interactive, performative, or experiential works. Traditionally, the hackathon unfolds across three main thematic directions:

  • Hack the Hack – designing new, more inclusive and accessible hackathon models
  • Hack the Community – creating technologies that strengthen communities or foster positive social impact
  • Hack the Party – developing playful, interactive installations and shared experiences

Alongside these, participants are also free to pursue any idea without thematic constraints.

The Barcelona Node at ESPRONCEDA

The Barcelona node will take place at Nau 10, offering a dedicated and focused space for collaborative work, experimentation, and exchange. Participation is limited, and those interested in actively taking part are invited to register through the official link.

As host of the Barcelona node, ESPRONCEDA provides the working space, access to technological resources, logistical support, and an environment conducive to experimentation and collaboration. Throughout the hackathon, a live webcam portal will maintain a continuous connection with the MIT campus, reinforcing a shared sense of presence and exchange across locations.

Hosting the MIT Reality Hack Barcelona node aligns with Espronceda’s ongoing commitment to immersive practices, cultural innovation, and international collaboration, while strengthening ties with the MIT ecosystem and the local XR community.
